HVAC in Rohnert Park

Rohnert Park at a glance

Rohnert Park is a city of 44,390 people (2020) about 50 miles north of San Francisco and one of California's early planned cities. Sonoma State University is nearby, and the city is twinned with Hashimoto in Japan.

What that means for your heating and cooling

A planned city built largely in one era means whole neighbourhoods of similar houses with similar systems, many with a furnace and AC coil in the attic or a hall closet. When one neighbour replaces a system, others of the same age often aren't far behind; see system replacement.

Lettered sections

Neighbourhoods east of Highway 101 are organized into sections named by letter. Homes built in the same section at the same time often share the same quirks, such as a hot back bedroom at the end of a long duct run, so balancing the airflow often fixes the same problem street by street.

From seed farm to city

The land was part of Rancho Cotate, granted by the Mexican government to Captain Juan Castañeda in 1844 and later split up and sold to settlers. The city takes its name from the Rohnert family, whose Rohnert Seed Farm covered much of the area before the city was planned. Homes here now sit on what was open farmland, with little shade on many lots, so afternoon sun on west-facing rooms is a common reason the AC struggles.
